poetry

Since 2016 my husband Toby has been writing poems to accompany my work. And as we’ve traveled to art shows around the country, we’ve heard from so many people how much they loved them - including many requests for a compilation of them into a book. So we did it. :) We put together a collection of 20 poems written by Toby and inspired by my artwork. So if you love the poems please buy the book.

More about how we got here. You might already know this but I love to work big. Sometimes a single piece can take me 6-12 weeks to complete. It’s during this time, when I’m collaging and painting, that I’m also weaving a story together. Well, it’s more like I’m pulling together a set of ideas, a collection of metaphors, and a range of emotions that are swirling around in my head and heart. Throughout this time Toby is popping in and out of the studio - listening, watching, asking questions, and letting me ask questions of myself and each piece.

At some point during all of this he goes off and writes. He completes sometimes just one but other times, two or even three poems. I read through them and try and get a feel for which one fits best. I offer edits and suggestions, but usually nothing too much. It works best if I just let him be him. And I’m sure it wouldn’t be this way for anyone else in the world. But, as fate would have it, it’s him and me. So it works.

By the time the piece is finished, the poem is finished and I release them together - which intertwines them forever.

Eventually, a full coffee style book is our goal. One which will be complete with my art, Toby’s poems, and even more of our story perhaps.
