Hello! I think even more than most this piece stays true to my original inspiration for this overall body of work (which began way back in 2014). Because this piece is all about elevating the sense of wonder and belief which we felt as children – and which then tends to fade as we become adults.
Yes, hopefully this piece will rekindle feelings and thoughts which can then remind us that the innocence of youth can be astonishingly powerful and breathtaking even, and how it shouldn’t be so easily forgotten or devalued. Because the idea of a fairytale, the idea of magic, the idea of guardian angels, or owls who appear in the night to guide us forward – these things are all quite wonderful. Not only is it fun to let yourself believe in these things, it’s revitalizing and rejuvenating. I love the idea of one’s imagination running wild and the sort of carefree sense of happiness that comes with that.
And if I’m honest I hadn’t really talked to him too much about this piece while I was working on it. But he was there of course, watching me work and taking it in. It was more like a situation where I’m showing him what I’m doing and I’m counting on him to know what my intentions are. And then he eventually wrote the poem and I was like, yes thank you, that’s what I meant. That’s always what I had in mind!

A photo of the same piece after I painted the bear. I feel like I successfully managed to keep the essence and stories found in the underlying collage layer. The details I thought would help convey meaning and emotion are the ones that I kept. The others I painted away. The bear is full of both love and strength. Her heart is wide open. At the same time she will not back down. She will not surrender. She is wild and rugged. She is tender and sweet.
